As evacuees from Sandy Lake First Nation continue to settle in at the Dev Centre in Cornwall, we kindly ask the public and media to respect their privacy and the emotional strain they are experiencing. This is a deeply stressful and uncertain time, and the focus remains on the health, safety, and well-being of all those affected.

“We are grateful for the continued care being shown to our families and community members,” said Councillor Allan Rae of Sandy Lake First Nation. “This support is helping ease the burden of being far from home. We ask for continued patience and privacy as our people adjust to this temporary situation.”

The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne (MCA) remains actively involved in supporting evacuees, including through coordinated mental health resources as well as cultural and recreational activities. On Wednesday, June 11, evacuees were invited to attend the Akwesasne Junior B Thunder game. Nia:wen to AMBE for providing transportation and to the Akwesasne Thunder for welcoming visitors free of charge.

In addition, a community call-out was made for donations to help provide much-needed essentials. Cultural programming and recreational opportunities are also being developed to support well-being and connection during this difficult time.

“We want to express our deepest appreciation to our Emergency Measures Program, MCA staff and community members who have stepped up to support Sandy Lake families,” said Grand Chief Leonard Lazore. “From the organization of cultural activities and recreational outings, to providing wellness support, this shows what is possible when we come together in the spirit of community and compassion. Nia:wen to our staff, Council, community, and all those who answered the call to help.”

We would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Canadian Red Cross, Dev Centre, and the City of Cornwall for their partnership and continued support in this coordinated effort. Your collaboration and care have helped create a welcoming, safe space for those who have been displaced.

The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne will continue working with Sandy Lake First Nation, the Canadian Red Cross, and other partners throughout the evacuation period to ensure ongoing support and culturally appropriate care.
